Helping Those In Need In The Communities We Serve

Mary’s Helping Hand was established in 2026, inspired by two key ideas. The first was to create a philanthropic identity within Hills, where we give back to the communities we serve by assisting those in need through donations of gently used and new clothing, as well as winter jackets. Over the years, we noticed during many of the moves we assisted with: people often had excess clothing they needed to discard when moving to a new home. Much of this clothing was still in great condition, with in many cases the only issue being that it had been outgrown. We began to request these items to ensure that they would get to families in need.

The second idea was to honor the legacy of Mary House, a devoted volunteer who positively impacted many lives throughout the Durham Region through her decades of community service. Mary was also the Grandmother of David Gribben, co-owner of Hills Moving

“Marys Helping Hand is a service brought to life from the example taught by my grandmother who was an extraordinary woman. Her dedication to not only her family but also to countless charitable causes across Durham was remarkable. Over the years, I witnessed firsthand the impact she made, and the lives she touched, serve as a constant reminder that the values she instilled in her family through example will continue to carry on my grandmothers legacy.  I’ll never forget how she made people smile, she was able to do it with such ease”.

How We Currently Accept Donations

We would greatly appreciate the ability to accept donations from all sources, but currently, we are not prepared to manage that. At this time, we are only able to accept clothing donations at the time of a customers move. Please allow us some time, and we will expand our capacity to accept more. We are only accepting clothing donations, specifically jackets, and not monetary contributions. Thank you for your interest and support. Together, we can assist those in our community who are in genuine need.

About Mary House

Mary House (1932 – 2020)

Mary was a kind-hearted individual whose dedication to assisting others served as a source of inspiration for everyone in her life. In addition to being heavily  involved wih her family, Mary spent a significant portion of her time volunteering for numerous organizations in Durham, including Lakeridge Health and the John Street Seniors Centre, for over two decades. She was also front and center in Gander Newfoundland when 911 sadly took place, helping so many individuals and families with food, blankets and shelter who were stranded and unable to travel for days. Mary will be honored and remembered as a devoted Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and a person who made a difference in her community by helping countless individuals throughout the Durham Region.

Mary’s Helping Hand represents our commitment at Hills Moving to continue Mary’s legacy by supporting those in need within our community, an endeavor she passionately believed in and instilled in everyone around her as a vital principle.
