Take These Precautions

For those who have booked their Greater Toronto Area movers, you will now likely be on the lookout for helpful moving tips sure to make your life easier. You are also probably wondering how to move your larger appliances, such as your fridge and freezer, without causing any damage. Here’s advice from the experts at Hills Moving:

  • Step 1

Turn off the refrigerator at least 2 hours before the move to allow it to defrost (although it is preferable to do this the night before) and unplug it. From there, you will want to remove all food, shelves, boxes and trays. It may be a good idea to arrange with a loved one to store any perishables in their fridge for the duration of the move.

  • Step 2

Ensure that the door remains closed by securing it with tape (be careful which tape you use as anything too strong could wind up damaging the finish). Ensure that you have enough movers to help you get the appliance to the truck without dropping it or scraping it against door frames and walls.

  • Step 3

If you can, place the fridge/freezer upright in the moving truck. If this is not possible, avoid laying the fridge/freezer on its back at all costs. Lay it on its side instead – on the opposite side of the hinges. This will ensure that there is no strain on the doors and will minimize the risk of any damage. Remember to leave the appliance standing upright again for at least 3 hours before switching it back on at your new home.
